Vijay Bhoopalan 50 Years Shine-Dalgarno Symposium 2023

Vijay Bhoopalan

Vijay Bhoopalan is a second-year PhD student working under the supervision of Prof. Elizabeth Gardiner at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. His research project has identified a unique thrombopoietic property of a new anticancer drug, and his aims are to dissect the mechanisms underlying this observed increase in circulating platelet numbers in mice. Vijay has used a host of platelet assays to assess platelet function in these mice together with multicolour flow cytometry to evaluate changes in bone-marrow haematopoietic progenitor, and haematopoietic stem cells, multipotent progenitors and megakaryocytes. His overall goal is to assess the utility of this drug to alleviate thrombocytopenia, a common side-effect observed in patients receiving chemotherapeutics and ultimately to identify novel factors that promote platelet production. On completion of his PhD, Vijay wants to commence a career in research and is very interested to explore opportunities for a post-doctoral position in the field of haematopoiesis.
